Biennale Architettura in Venice
After the success of the 2022 Art Biennale, Venice is hosting this year the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, titled “The Laboratory of the Future” and curated by Lesley Lokko.
The exhibition is open to the public from May 20th to November 26th 2023 (pre-opening May 18th - 19th) at the Giardini and the Arsenale in Venice and at Forte Marghera in Mestre.
Biennale Architettura 2023: The Laboratory of the Future
Lesley Lokko, curator of the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, proposes an exhibition focused on the concept of change, primarily climate change.
In fact, La Biennale di Venezia is committed to promoting a more sustainable model for the design, installation and operation of all its events, obtaining carbon neutrality certification for all its events in 2022.
For Lesley Lokko “an architecture exhibition is both a moment and a process. It borrows its structure and format from art exhibitions, but it differs from art in critical ways which often go unnoticed. Aside from the desire to tell a story, questions of production, resources and representation are central to the way an architecture exhibition comes into the world, yet are rarely acknowledged or discussed. From the outset, it was clear that the essential gesture of The Laboratory of the Future would be «change»”.
More than half of the 89 participants in the 2023 Architecture Biennale come from Africa and the African Diaspora and 70% of the works on display were created by individually run studios or made of up to five people.
Among the 64 participating nations, Niger is present for the first time and the Holy See returns to exhibit on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
As usual, the main section is housed in the Central Pavilion at the Giardini venue, while the others are housed at the Arsenale and on the mainland at Forte Marghera in Mestre.
Numerous collateral events, meetings, conferences and performances are planned.
